We are all taught from a very young age that there are certain rules in life that we must follow. It begins with the rules set by our parents, designed to teach us lessons, keep an orderly house, and help us fit into society as we grow into young adults. As we get older and our minds mature we are given a new set of rules designed by our government and legal systems. We know and understand that stealing will get us into serious trouble, and that killing is absolutely not tolerated. But some people choose to ignore these rules, some people act on their impulses and darkest thoughts; and those people are sent to jail.

In 1829 a new prison was built in Pennsylvania, and it was named Eastern State Penitentiary. It was designed by John Haviland to encourage the prisoners to think about what they had done, and spend their time in prison quietly repenting for their crimes. However, the strictly enforced ‘quiet’ began to hurt, rather than help the prisoners. The cells had soundproof doors, the guards wore slippers to hush the sound of their footsteps in the halls,  there were individual exercise yards and slots in the doors for food so that prisoners rarely saw another human face. Both the minds of the convicts and officers began to warp under these conditions, and by the time the prison closed many had died and others had been stricken with mental illness.

Be grateful my dear friends, that you did not commit a crime during the days when Eastern State was open.  You wouldn’t feel so comfortable dressing as an officer or a convict this year for Halloween if you had been there, and witnessed firsthand the worst years of that prison. For them, the game of  cops and robbers had a tragic end, and no one came out as the victor.

Imagine running through a dark forest in the middle of the night. The wind is cold and biting for this time of year, and stings as it rushes past your face. Something is chasing you, but you dare not look back for fear that it will be much closer than you expected.

Headless Horseman

You concentrate on moving your feet, and avoiding tree branches, but forget for a moment that tree roots are more of a threat. A gnarled root catches your food and sends you crashing into the ground. You loose precious seconds as you scramble back to your feet and begin to run again. The light of the moon is dim, and hardly illuminating the path in front of you. You pray that you don’t run into a tree, because that would most certainly mean your end.

Behind you, the sound of a massive creature huffing and snorting grows louder. It’s hoofs are digging into the half-frozen ground with ease, and jetting it forward at a pace faster than your own. It will only be a matter of time now until it catches up to you, until it has you. But the horse is not what you fear, oh no, it’s the rider. A man, large and vengeful who seems to have come from the very center of the earth. From hell itself. He knows exactly where you are, and expertly steers his horse around trees and over roots despite not having a head.

A head is what he is after…. the head currently sitting on your shoulders.

You chance a look behind you and see that he is there, his shoulders are turned and he is reaching for something. In that dim light of the moon you see the glint of metal; of sharpened, bloodstained steel. He swings the blade towards you, and you resign your life to The Headless Horseman.

No one likes to play the part of the responsible parent. Sometimes, choosing appropriate teen Halloween costumes can force a parent into such a position.
Teenagers are stuck between being children and adults. The combination of lack
of experience and desire for independence can create some tense parent-teenager
situations. Halloween should not be time of turmoil in your household. A few

As a young adult, your child’s mind is excited to try new things. They will
hear things from friends, and see things. Shopping for teen Halloween costumes
can be a nightmare. Some are geared towards older young adults, and may not
be appropriate for your teenager. Even some tween costume ideas can be questionable.
When confronted with this conflict, remember to hold your ground while maintaining
some level of understanding.

If your son or daughter has not yet mentioned what they will be dressing as
for a friend’s Halloween party, it may be a good idea to ask. Keeping the lines
of communication open early will help avoid a potentially embarrassing scene
later. You do not want to prepare to take your teen to the party only to argue
about it at the last minute after you see what they think they will be wearing!

it is safe to say most all of us find that in our teens we were, for lack of
another word, moody. Remember that, as the parent, your approach can make all
the difference. Even if they do not like what you have to say. Treat them as
an adult, but remember they are a young adult and guidance is still important.

Communication is also important when your teen starts going to parties with
friends. In the end, the lessons you have taught them will be the most important
part of their responsible decision-making. That does not mean you should simply
cut them loose for the evening and let them know you will see them tomorrow.
Ask your teen where they plan to spend the holiday, and who they will spend
it with. Let them know you are concerned, even if they do not like it.

If your child has not yet reached teenager-hood, you may only have to deal
with the discussion of which preteen costume they can choose. However, if they
are older, you may also need to worry about where they will be going as well
as what they will wear. Be flexible on the holidays. If you do not want your
son or daughter riding with a friend who just got their driver’s license
then consider offering to drive or carpool with another parent.

Understanding can be a big part of getting along. When you were a teen, your
parents were probably the most disagreeable people in your life. Now, you know
why. Use that knowledge to your advantage. Try to approach things in a constructive,
rather than aggressive, way. Do not compromise your principles, but explain
your reasoning and understand that it can be hard to see the entire picture
when you are young.

Teen Halloween costumes are only the beginning of your worries as a parent
during this holiday of tricks and treats. Be open with your son or daughter
and keep the lines of communication flowing. Express your guidelines early on
so that when it comes time for them to attend a party or choose what to wear,
the arguments are minimal. Some teen Halloween costumes may not be acceptable,
and if that is the case, offer suggestions to remedy the problem, such as wearing
a t-shirt underneath, or modifying the look. Most importantly remember that,
no matter how much they kick and scream they will thank you for it when they
are older.
