Facebook Costume

Facebook Costume

Can’t think of anything to be this Halloween? Are you looking around at the items in your living room or bedroom thinking “… could I be a coke can? A sock? A remote control?” The answer -for possibly the first time- is exactly like what your mother has been telling you; you can be whatever you want to be! There is absolutely no chance that you’ll come to the party dressed as the exact same thing as someone else; because this costume will be your own unique brainchild for you and you alone to reap the benefits of. Generally though, it takes a little wit to pull this off correctly. You can’t come to a party as a ball point pen and expect everyone to be in awe of your genius. No, this takes a bit of thought. You really have to know what type of people will be at this party or event that you are going to, or at the very least you need to know what age group will be the most prevalent, then you can choose your ‘object costume’ accordingly.

Say, for example, that the majority of your friends are really into facebook or myspace. You could construct a piece of cardboard with straps so that you could wear it, and decorate it to look like your facebook or myspace page! You could cut a hole in part of it for your face to peek through as if it were your profile pic, and carry a pen with you so that all of your friends at the party could ‘write on your wall’. It would be a really fun conversation starter that would definitely get people interacting.

Or maybe you and your friends all have a specific favorite game that you play. There are “Twister” dresses available to purchase on the internet, or you could use your creativity to construct a giant card or game piece to wear to the party.

Jack the Ripper

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Jack the Ripper is one of history’s most notorious criminals, and also possibly one of it’s most depraved. He murdered prostitutes in the Whitechapel area of England in late 1888. But it wasn’t the number of murders that this man is famous for, it was how severely the bodies of these women were mutilated and how he was never identified or arrested. There were many murders during the same time period, that had similar qualities to the, but only five can be truly tied to Jack the Ripper.

Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper

The first was Mary Anna Nichols, killed on August 31st. Her throat was slit, and there were several deep jagged wounds to her abdomen. The second was Annie Chapman, killed on September 8th and discovered with her throat cut, a completely slashed open abdomen, and a missing her uterus. The third was Elizabeth Stride, killed on September 30th. It was suspected that The Ripper was interrupted during her murder because she lacked the abdomen slash and slit throat of the previous two women. Her injuries were to her jaw and left artery, meaning that she must have bled to death. The fourth was Catherine Eddowes, September 30th as well, suggesting that after he was interrupted he had to find someone else to finish the job with. Her mutilations were similar to the first two, but her left kidney as well as the majority of her uterus. The fifth was by far the most graphic; Mary Jane Kelly, killed November 9th. It was different from the other murders, as she was found in her own bed in the small apartment where she lived. The others were all found outside on the street, which might explained why she had been the most badly mutilated. He had more time in the enclosed space to do all that he wanted. When they found her, her heart was missing, most of her organs had been removed from her abdomen and tossed about, and her throat had been slit all the way to her spine.

But Jack the Ripper didn’t just commit these crimes and wander off into oblivion without leaving a little bit of evidence to taunt the police with. In fact, he wrote them letters. The most interesting of the three that the police of the time had deemed authentic (understandably they received hundreds of letters, most from people attempting to provide information that would help them catch the ripper, but some were from individuals falsely claiming to be the killer himself.) was the “From Hell” letter, or the “Lusk Letter” as it was sent directly to Inspector Lust himself. This letter was accompanied by a box that contained half of a human kidney preserved in ethanol. Eerily he claimed that he had fried and eaten the other half.

Some call Jack the Ripper the greatest serial killer of all time, but what I would most like to know is not his identity; but what the heck he needed all those uterus for.

May we reconvene under the blood red moon,

Movie Character Costumes

Na na na na na na na na BATMAN

Na na na na na na na na BATMAN

The average person can spend thousands of hours watching television and movies throughout their lifetime. We talk about movies with our friends, on the internet, and when getting to know someone for the first time. Movie critics make a living out of having an opinion on the movies they watch and we trust them (or rather, some of us do) to tell us whether or not a movie is worth paying ten dollars to go see in the theater during opening week. With how involved movies are in our relationships and daily lives, its no wonder that being a movie character for Halloween would be a great way to impress friends. A few things to consider before choosing which movie to be a character from; do your friends watch the same kind of films as you, and would they recognize this character if he/she did not have a recognizable outfit? There’s really no fun in being a movie character that dresses like any old joe off the street, because what that really says is that you didn’t want to bother with a Halloween costume that year, and pulled some clothes out of your closet. (If you feel that you have to go this route, at least where a “hello my name is…” nametag) But the most fun comes from picking a recognizable character and acting a little like them while at the party.

One costume I would love to see is Nosferatu from the silent film by the same name. I don’t care that that film was made in in the 1920s, that creature is terrifying, moreso than a lot of current movie monsters that rely on gore to do the scaring.

Of course there are plenty of superhero movies out there and plenty of superheroes to be. You don’t even have to worry about making the costumes, as most of these are available to purchase.
