Raise your hand if you love music! There are only a few people on this earth today that hate music, and there is something substantial wrong with their mental state. The rest of us love music. We listen to the radio or Cds in our cars, we carry mp3 players with us, we have music stored on our computers and in our phones, we sing in the shower, and hum or whistle when we’re in a good mood. Music is as much a part of humanity as opposable thumbs are. So this Halloween, instead of being something boring or common; show your appreciation for music by creating an original costume!

You could go the route of dressing up a the type of person who sings or plays the type of music you listen to. For example; dress as a punk if punk rock is what you listen too most, or a pop princess if you dig that type of thing. Or you could attempt a costume that was a little less humanoid and a little more specific.

Creating your favorite MP3 player out of cardboard and either wearing it or carrying it around as a gigantic prop would be interesting. Where it would show the current play list on the screen, you could list all of your favorite bands and songs to make it even more personal. Or perhaps you could construct a top or necklace out of old CD-Rs that have been collecting dust in your bedroom since everything is on your mp3 player now. If you’re not too much into this new technology and long for the days of vinal , you could do the same with records. Goodwill and other thrift stores generally have a section where people have donated their old records, and they go for less than a dollar each. Or maybe just go as the record player itself.

There are plenty of ways to show your love for music, just put on your favorite tunes for inspiration and get to working on that costume!

Disney Magic

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Disney feature films began popping up around the late 1930s, so there’s a very good chance that if you’re alive today Walt Disney had something to do with your childhood. Or at the very least has been a part of your children or grandkids lives. Almost everyone has a favorite Disney movie or character that meant a lot to them when they were younger, or inspired them somehow. So for Halloween this year, why not pay homage to the characters that made your younger years more bearable?

Disney

Disney

For the girls (regardless of age) there are Disney princess costumes available for almost every single one of them. You really don’t need to worry about wigs either, because there is at least one girl that for each hair color. If you’re a red-head you could be Ariel, if you’re a brunette there is Belle, if you’ve got darker hair you could choose from Jasmine or Snow White, and if you’re blond there are the options of Cinderella or Aurora (sleeping beauty).

But Disney isn’t all about it’s princesses either, there are plenty of other characters to pick and choose from. You could go traditional and put together a costume that resembles Mickey, Minnie, Donald or Goofy. Or you could pick from some of the other characters such as Peter Pan, Pinocchio, any of the princes, Hercules, Jafar, Captain Hook, Cruella de Vil, or one of the monsters from Monsters Inc.

Keep in mind that some of these other characters, though they aren’t necessarily less well know, are definitely less favored in contrast to (for example) the princesses. So if you want to be them and you want to do a decent job, it’s going to take a little bit of creativity and work. Especially for the characters are aren’t really human, such as the monsters, or Mickey. But if you can pull it off, everyone will be very impressed by your creativity and skill, you might even win a costume contest or two!

Hey hey, you wanna be a rock star?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Who hasn’t wanted to be a rock star at some point or another in their lives? Even the shyest of the shy wonder occasionally what it would be like to make amazing music, or to have thousands of adoring fans that would give an arm or a leg just to say hi. So why not make that dream come true in the only way that you can (without actually having any talent or a fantastic team behind you to make it seem like you do)…. be a rock star for Halloween!

Rock Star

Rock Star

There are a few different ways to be a rock star. The first thought that generally comes to mind is that one should dress as if they were from an 80’s hair band. Generally this involves a big crazy wig, bandanna, and either a t-shirt with the sleeves torn off, pants cut to look like frayed short-shorts, or both. But that’s really more of the comedic route to take. I personally don’t mind encouraging the cheesy costumes (one shouldn’t ever take themselves too seriously, it’s not healthy) but in the event that you wanted to be a specific rock star, there are a few things you should consider.

1. Do the people at the party (or wherever you will be wearing this costume to) listen to the same kind of music as you? Or is this singer/band member have a specific recognizable style that all people would know despite not being fans of the music?

2. Can you duplicate the hair? I’d say that more than half of any artist’s look is their hair, and if you can’t do it with your own hair you might need to look into getting a wig.

3. If you’re going to be a female singer (who isn’t necessarily a rock star) make sure you do a recognizable outfit or that you look enough like her for people to make the connection instantly. You wouldn’t want to go through the trouble of getting an outfit that looks like hers and for example, decide that you didn’t want to wear a wig; and have everyone at the party think that you’ve simply come as a half-naked woman instead of this singer you were trying to portray.

A fun idea that you might want to make use of (if you have enough friends that are into it) would be to pick a singer who has gone through a lot of different images, or who has a music video with a much of costume changes; and have everyone dress as the same person but in different outfits. When you get to the party you can say “we are _____” and do everything collectively. This isn’t anywhere near the best example, but in Brittany Spear’s video for “Toxic” she had at least four distinct different outfits/hairstyles/colors, all of which would catch attention at a party.

Just toss the idea around in your head, you might come up with something even better.
